What 42001 is trying to do

The standard asks an organization to treat AI as something you manage, not a gadget you install. That means assigning responsibility, assessing risk, controlling data, and checking whether the system still does what you claimed. NIST AI RMF speaks a similar language in functions: govern, map, measure, manage.

A builder checklist that is not a fake audit

1. Name the deployer owner.
2. Write the purpose of each system in one sentence.
3. List data that never goes in a prompt.
4. Set human review for money, legal rights, and employment.
5. Log enough to reconstruct a bad answer.
6. Revisit vendors quarterly.

That is not a 42001 certificate. It is the literacy a PM can finish after Module 0.

Where security still sits

Access control, prompt injection testing, and model theft are security. Put them on the CISO track. Do not hide them inside the one-page staff policy or nobody will read either file.
